Money (Simplified).

3rd May 2020

I was listening to a podcast the other day; about the potential economic repercussions of the current COVID situation, and I heard something that made my ears prick.

See, I have never been an expert in economics or understanding and managing finances despite my best attempts in Year 8 Mathematics to understand the concept of tax. After being lectured to for 10 minutes I gave up – unable to grasp the fact that a sum of my hard earned money would disappear into the clouds. I faceplanted the table, defeated once again by the numbers.

Needless to say, my understanding of money has improved slightly since then. My maths on the other hand is another story…

When people talk money to me, it still needs to be articulated through fitness analogies and to the standard of a 12 year old. This is where I am at right now.

This podcast was ticking all the boxes, before the economics guru announced the simple formula for making money:

To make money, you need to provide people with goods or services that are going to be of value to them. If you want more money, provide people with more value; and therefore, the highest paid people are the ones who provide the most value.

This seems to be a universal law with any aspect of business, relationships or spirituality.

I have heard it touted in business circles that the way to improve customer retention and to get them to buy into your product is to provide them with more content and information, even if it is for free. The short term investment pays off in the long run.

When establishing relationships, I have found that if you are loving to another person, you are more likely to receive that love back.

Similarly, in spirituality, there requires a degree of “sacrifice” of the ego; giving away the materialistic things in life, in order to experience wholeness and true fulfilment.

Why would money be any different?

This realisation has given me clarity and purpose. Sure, I can dive down the rabbit hole of stocks, interest rates and inflation, but for now, this simple equation is good enough for me.

The more you give, the more you get.
